Beijing Impressions

Huge. Beijing is huge. Even the CBD area seems huge. Despite the massive skyscrapers there still seems to be plenty of open space, unlike in Manhattan where sunshine on the ground is a rarity unless the street is perfectly aligned with the direction of the sun.

Expensive. Not as much as New York overall, but certain items are as expensive or even more expensive. My rent is about 1/3 what I used to pay in NY, for an apartment that sells for about the same as what my old apartment in NY would sell for. But there are certain things that seem to be double what I am used to paying in the U.S. Overall my preliminary estimate is that 400k rmb per year after tax is what it takes for a family of 4 to live comfortably in Beijing in a rented apartment with no luxury purchases and still have just a bit of money put away as savings, but whether that turns out to be true remains to be seen.

    welcome to beijing.

    haha i knew it.
I was shocked by how expensive things are in beijing when I went back just over 1 yr ago. I don’t know how people survive.

haha, after following your blog for more than 3 years, you finally return to China and what’s more, in BJ my hometown!

400K for live expense is ok in metropolitan cities like BJ and SH, however, the family of 4 may not lead a life which “live comfortably in Beijing in a rented apartment with no luxury purchases and still have just a bit of money put away as savings”. NOWAY.

Beijing is already very expensive. Shanghai goes even frenzier. Try, my friend.

are you still practicing law in BJ? If yes, given your biglaw credentials, then you should be able to snag a global paying job in the upwards of $160k, no?
sth is seriously wrong with the COL standard in China if you cannot afford to buy a house.

  9. littlenorth

DP–yes, global pay, plus a handsome COLA. but there’s still the sticker shock…and the feeling of getting ripped off by someone (still don’t know who that is).

jason – i don’t know what the market now is for COLA in Asia but i’ve heard it could range from $0-$100k depending on the firm and location and one’s personal circumstances.

zhyue — not sure about what to do with education yet — but do drop me a note before you come out to Beijing!

Well. With global pay and COLA, you can’t complain. With COL standard in China rising fast, it would still be a stretch to argue that $160k in China cannot carry you as far as it would in NYC.
